The Blue-eyed Ground Dove (Columbina cyanopis) is one of the rarest birds on the planet. It was considered possibly extinct until it was rediscovered in 2015 in the municipality of Botumirim, northern Minas Gerais. The species is emblematic because it is directly associated with the Cerrado, one of the most threatened biomes in Brazil. Since 2016, SAVE Brasil has been working to protect this species and its habitat. To this end, it develops a conservation project focused on 3 lines of action:
Habitat protection:
- He acquired and maintains a 593-hectare private reserve that protects not only the Planalto Dove, but all the biodiversity present in the area, including other endangered species of birds, mammals, and the rich flora of the Cerrado. If you would like to visit, simply schedule an appointment using the link below.
- He supported the creation of the Botumirim State Park, a protected area of 35,000 hectares, and is currently a member of the Management Council of this conservation unit.
Research and conservation:
- Conducts the annual census of the species.
- Monitors nests and controls predators.
- Conducts diverse research on the habitat and natural history of the Planalto Dove.
- Created an ex-situ conservation program to establish a safe population.
Tourism and Community Engagement
- Organizes visits to see the Planalto Dove.
- Trains and interacts with local community guides.
- Conducts environmental education activities and disseminates knowledge with the community of Botumirim .
