ASAS Program - Prevention of bird extinction

In 2019, we initiated the Crested Curassow Project, which focuses primarily on finding conservation strategies for the crested curassow (Crax fasciolata) in the area surrounding the Água Vermelha Hydroelectric Power Plant reservoir in the northwestern region of the state of São Paulo. The curassow is a keystone species for environmental preservation, as it plays important ecological roles in maintaining forests and improving the region's environment. Despite its importance, the crested curassow is an endangered species due to the reduction of native forests, pressure from hunters, and forest fires, thus reinforcing the urgency of actions like this one.

Objectives:

- Conservation of the region's birdlife with a focus on the crested curassow;

Scientific research;

- Engaging the local community in the conservation of the species.
