Sustainable Fields Program

The Pampa is a biome with unique biological, cultural, and economic characteristics. Formed by large expanses of natural grasslands that stretch from southern Rio Grande do Sul to Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, it is home to 12 globally endangered bird species, such as the Yellow-breasted Seedeater (Xanthopsar flavus), the Yellow-bellied Seedeater (Sporophila palustris) and the Cinnamomea Seedeater (Sporophila cinnamomea), and the Black-tailed Trogon (Xolmis dominicanus).

The Pampa's conservation was guaranteed for centuries by the practice of livestock farming in natural pastures, but today it is threatened by the intensive use of land for agriculture, the invasion of annoni grass, an exotic plant species, afforestation with pine and eucalyptus, the misuse of pesticides, and overgrazing. These activities represent a risk not only to the biodiversity of the Pampa, but also to the Gaucho culture, which is intimately linked to cattle ranching.

The Pasture Alliance is an initiative led by BirdLife International in conjunction with its representatives SAVE Brasil, Aves Argentinas, Guyra Paraguay and Aves Uruguay, and is made possible thanks to the support of the Bobolink Foundation, US Fish and Wildlife Service and US Forest Service.

The actions aim to integrate the development of the Pampa region with the conservation of biodiversity, through the promotion of environmentally friendly management techniques.
