Birds globally threatened with extinction.

Learn more about the IUCN Red List.

The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened Species globally assesses the conservation status of species for over four decades, aiming to highlight threatened taxa and promote their conservation. This information makes decision-making clearer and more objective, elevating it from a local to a global level. The Red List divides species into categories: Extinct (EX), Extinct in the Wild (EW), Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), Vulnerable (VU), Near Threatened (NT), Least Concern (LC), and Data Deficient (DD) . Species from the Vulnerable (VU) category onwards are considered threatened. The LC and NT categories do not yet classify a species as threatened.

BirdLife International is the authority on birds for the IUCN Red List, providing each year the categories and detailed documentation of all birds in the world. Brazil is the second country with the highest number of threatened species in the world, with 148 bird species globally threatened with extinction (BirdLife International/IUCN update, 2024) . SAVE Brasil has been working on developing conservation actions in the country to reverse this situation. To date, 65 bird species have benefited directly or indirectly from SAVE Brasil's projects.

In addition to birds considered globally threatened, there are also species that, while not in a worrying situation worldwide, may be threatened within Brazil. To find out which species these are, click here.
